I Live in Pennsylvania, and want to do a road trip to California and back, with a few detours along the way. The trip totals about 6,000 miles. My question is that i have a 2012 Honda accord that was given to me by a family member so I know it was taken care of. It has 100,000 miles on and a new timing belt. Is this car safe to take on a road trip to California? I am just worried that something could break down on the way there. I don't know much about cars. Thanks in advanced.

Honda Accords are pretty reliable, and especially later model ones like a 2012, shouldn't be a problem. Now that being said, we don't know anything about this particular car's history, so maybe you should contact the family member who gave it to you, and ask them what they think. Being as they are family members, they wouldn't want anything happening to you, so they may caution you against it or for it.

Among the precautions you should take before taking off is to have the engine oil changed before the trip, if it hasn't already been done just recently by your family member. Check the tire pressures of all of the tires, including the spare. All of the regular tires should be at 30 psi or slightly higher. The spare tire, if it's one of those space-saving spares, should be at 60psi or higher.

Well, I have a 2005 Honda Accord with 100,000 miles on it and a new timing belt, and I would take it cross country. Of course, I don't know that much about cars either...but Hondas are very reliable, and 100K miles on an Accord is not a huge amount. Hondas can be relied on to still be running at 200K or higher, from what I understand. So yes, I would guess that it's safe.

There are these things called MECHANICS. Suggest you have your car get some regular service and an inspection before long travel.

Seriously. What shape are the tires? When was the last Oil change?

My car has 2000,000 miles and is much older than yours I go on long trips. I also always have it inspected FIRST by a REAL mechanic.

Your Local AAA Office has a list of Certified Inspection Mechanics.

100,000 miles is just mid-life for most cars, especially Hondas, and ESPECIALLY ones that have been well taken care of. Just do what one would do before any long trip (oil change if necessary, top of fluids, battery check, air conditioner in good working order, tires, shock absorbers, etc). Any car can break down, but this one should not. {And if it does, just get it repaired, just like you would at home.} Have a good trip.

The car in its present condition is fine HOWEVER you will need to maintain it on your 6000mile drive.

Oil change, transmission, etc.

Make sure the brakes and tires are good too
