yesterday my teacher from new york well telling us how some times she hurts our feelings because were southerners & don't get sarcastic jokes as well as other parts of the country lol, i thought she was being silly! we where all kind of shocked she called us southerners lol, we're in tulsa, wich is probably the most cosmopolitain area of oklahoma(thats sad i just called tulsa cosmopoltain :P)
i had a teacher from minnesota & she called us southerners too! & was talking about how if oklahoma was a state in 1860 i would be confederate, an okie teacher added in that the south would have won the war if oklahoma was a state then haha!
i never really thought of oklahoma as a southern state, i though of it as it's own little group along with texas & arkansas, not really south, more hick-ish lol
i know we do have some southern things but i don't really think we're southern, do people from not the south think oklahoma is southern?

Oklahoma is part of the South. The south is the largest region in the US. There are parts of Oklahoma that culturally and geographically resemble the Deep south, and other areas that resemble Arkansas or Texas. BTW Arkansas is a Southern state.

Not all of Oklahoma is part of Dixie, but the predominant culture throughout the state is Southern. Oklahoma was a Confederate territory before statehood. The Five Civilized tribes all fought for the Confederacy.

There are several studies for those who have not visited the state. Anyone who has spent any time in OK and calls it the midwest is not the brightest bulb, or suffers from some southern guilt denial. Southern by the Grace of God was written by an Oklahoman. I would also suggest people look up the state meal of Oklahoma if they have any doubt.

Stereotype that Oklahoma would be southern- like the South. Some similarities, and many people settled the state from Texas and Arkansas- but many also came from the north during the land runs. A number of towns are very ethnic, primarily german; those towns tend to have large catholic populations as well. SW Oklahoma has a large mexican population, and definite mexican culture and has for decades. NW Oklahoma is more akin to the high plains of Colorado and Nebraska. So calling us a southern state does disservice to our varied population and geography. Our frigid winters are a lot different than a typical southern state as well. And as you know we are hotter than the southern states too- more like southwest US than SE.

I lived in Oklahoma 8 years, parts of it are southern, but when you refer to the entire state it is a plains or mid-western state. Any area north and west of Norman definitely isn't southern, but then again it is hard for me to define certain areas of southern states like Fort Smith, Arkansas as southern. Geographically it definitely isn't, and culturally it has certain aspects like a love of football, and you can get sweet tea in certain areas of the state, but again overall it isn't.

= Mackinac, I'm from Tulsa & I would have to say that Oklahoma in not part of the South, nor is it in the West, nor is it part of the Midwest. I know that sounds strange, but it's an odd location that doesn't really identify with any of those labels. Instead, it's a bit of all of those things.

I've never thought of OK being a southern state any more than I would think of New Mexico being a southern state. Yes, both states are in the southern half of the US but are not "southern" in the traditional use of the term in my opinion.

I would consider OK midwestern or perhaps southwestern but not southern.

No. It is a Western state. No state west of the Mississippi is a southern state, however southerly they may be located. They are midwestern or western states.
