An airline program for frequent fliers from Delta Airlines.

It also has attached to it branded Credit Cards and other perks. (see: http://www.americanexpress.com/apply/cgi-bin/page.cgi?24/2115/b/71)

You can also get more Sky miles from affiliated non-airline partners such as car rentals and hotels.

The airline(s) use it to drive more traffic to themselves and their partners.

When making purchases with various credit cards, some cards will award you with a quanitity of miles towards a trip on an airplane. For instance, Visa might award you 5 sky miles for every $100 purchase, if you need to fly a distance that is 50 miles away, you need to make ten $100 purchases for the flight to be completely covered in Skymiles.

Sky Miles are a form of frequent flyer reward that airlines, such as United, employ to encourage customers to continue to patronize their service. Trips accumulate miles that can be redeemed toward service upgrades (go from business to first-class) or for free or discounted travel.

Several major credit card companies offer Airline "miles" with purchases you make on their card. The more you spend, basically, the more miles you get. You can use these miles to get a cheaper plane ticket or even free tickets.
