I'm writing a novel and I need a nice bleak winter woodland for the final scenes near New York....within 2 hours driving time, preferably an Oak woodland or similar but remote from people and traffic....

There's a quite large forest in the middle of Staten Island (which is a Borough of New York). It's bounded on its sides by Forest Hill Road, Rockland Avenue and Arthur Kill Road and in the middle (or thereabouts) is the La Tourette Golf Club.
I don't know if you're familiar with Staten Island, but you can get there by taking the car ferry from Battery Park at the bottom of Manhattan (near Wall Street) which takes about 20 minutes as I recall, or, if approaching from Brooklyn, you would take the Verrazano Narrows Bridge on US 278.
Good luck with the novel!

Look into the upstate Columbia County area. There are tons of woodlands up that way. Old farm houses, open meadows... Plenty of different types of settings to use.
Straight up the Bronx River / Taconic Parkway. about 2 hour trip.
good luck with your novel.
