My sister and I are in our late 30's and looking for a place to spend a week in July for vacation. We would like to visit the mansions, spend some time on the beach, go for a sail, walk/bike around town, eat out, do some shopping, etc. Would there be enough to do in a week or is this more of a "long weekend" place to visit.

Yeah

A week would be way too long

A long weekend in Newport would be a good idea though

A week in Newport itself will be too long but you can broaden your trip by incorporating some other destinations nearby to add to your vacation. Three days should be enough time to explore Newport. You can add a day if you are going to go sailing. You could go to Foxwoods Casino and/or Mohegan Sun in CT. You could drive to New Bedford, MA and tour around there. You could also drive to Plymouth, MA which is very nice and explore that town. You could take one overnight of the week's vacation and go to Cape Cod and visit Provincetown, Cape Cod National Seashore, Hyannisport, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. You could even take a ferry ride to Martha's Vineyard for the day or an overnight.

The bottom line here is that a full week in just Newport is too long a time. There is just not enough to do and see to fill up an entire week. Therefore, either take some day trips as mentioned above or a two day/one night stay at either Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard.

That answer to that question is all about you.

Do you get bored if you have "nothing to do"? Or can you always find "something"?

I don't know much about Newport, RI, but I do know that whenever I go somewhere I can always find something, even when others are bored.

No way you would get bored in that vacation, because so much to do to spend your time.
