Might be Moving to Indian Head, MD - Need Advice?

We are looking around at houses and areas near there and are hearing that Southern Maryland has a lot of small rural towns with some good amount of crime (Waldorf). We like living near city life but in a good suburb or just outside of town near shops, good restaurants and such. My husband is willing to drive an hour to work to live in a good area. Does anyone know of a good town near Indian Head that is not too far out in the sticks. We were thinking something near Alexandria or surrounding cities? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
