It would be impossible for Greyhound buses to completely verify ID for boarding, because the only person available to do the checking is the driver, because a lot of their bus stops are unattended, especially rural stops. If the driver checked ID, how would he know what to check for in each ID?
You do need valid ID to use an E-ticket, because those are printed out from the internet, and more likely to involve credit card fraud. The only thing they check for is that the name on the ID matches the name on the ticket.

If you are under 18, there is a limit as to how far you can travel. They might ask for Student ID for the discount, though.
I am from Canada, and I have never been asked for ID on a greyhound.

No. The ticket will not be accepted without valid ID. If multiple passengers are traveling, each adult must have valid ID.
