I'm partial to Amtrak, my family uses it all the time.

Between major cities, you can probably find lower airfares (maybe not now?), but going to and from midsized or smaller towns, it's the cheapest way to go.

Also, if you are claustrophobic, or just want to relax, taking the train is much better. It's a lot less hectic, and you see more enroute.

If you are going cross-country, pay the extra for a sleeper. When you have a room, your meals are free, and you have your own space. If you have kids, they will love it.

The schedule is so sparse now, so some of the boarding times are inconvienient, but ridership is at record high levels, so there is hope that more trains will be added.

I rode amtrak from portland oregon to winona minnesota last may.

bring along warm clothing just in case it's cold in the train.

the seats are comfortable.

THey have a dome car when you can go and chat with other passengers, believe it or not, many normal people ride amtrak, unlike greyhound or the city bus.

It takes a long time to get anywhere, like it took me 41 hours to get from oregon to minnesota wisconsin border.

Bring lots of food with you, like i brought a full duffel bag of food, cause if you buy food on the train it's quite expensive.

sometimes it can be quite reasonable priced, however currently i don't think that is the case.

i noticed somebody suggested getting a sleeper car, NO. do not do that, it's like 300 dollars more round trip. waste of money, just get the coach seats,
