My husband got stationed in Elmendorf in 2005,we lived there until this past June(07) .

My husband retired so we could move,we came up from mtn home AFB Idaho, and it was a big change. Anchorage has a ton of crime, drugs ,gangs. I had never seen bums holding sings, you ll see that alot. There is alot to do there,,,to me,,,the malls were huge, they even have ice skating rinks and bowling alleys in the mall. Jcpenneys was 3 stories, and the the home department was outside acroos the street. We first lived in chugiak,,near eagle river, the commute took 45 minutes t go the 15 miles...there is only one way into Anchorage an one way out...we then moved to Palmer,,Palmer-wasilla are considered the Valley,,they have about 80,000 there....

the summers were OK,,got up to 70,,but rained just about EVERY day. the winters got down to about -35, that combined with 20 hrs of darkness and 80 mph winds,,made life rough. Some people LOVE Alaska,,,we werent part of that group. My husband moved there for the hunting...he hunted 4 days...there are no elk or deer in that part of Alaska..I never even seen a bear...just alot of moose.

the fishing,however was great.

I lived in Anchorage for a while. The winter did not get much colder than here in New York City, but it snows much more and they dont really plow the streets. Everyone wears chains. In the Anchorage Daily news they have aurora forecasts. Its fun to hang out at the 4th ave, mall in the winter ( and i am by no means a mall person). Also curling up with a good book in the Loussac library. They have lots of big comfy chairs and huge windows looking out onto the chugach mountains. In the winter I just took the people mover bus everywhere. You must go to the Bear tooth! Its the best movie theatre and you can drink beer and eat pizza while you watch and its super cheap.

But the best thing to do in Anchorage or AK in general is to get out in the mountains. Flattop and Wolverine Mountain are super close to downtown and easy to climb even in winter and are a good introduction to AK hiking. Awesome views of the city from up top. You can carry your snowboard or skis up and then ride down. Its awesome. In summer you can go anywhere. Try walking along Eklutna lake, or going up to Hatcher pass. (Eklutna comes right from the glacier and is anchorages water supply. this is the reason anchorage wins best water of any large city pretty regularly.)

Drive down to Girdwood and have dinner at the double Musky. Its one of the prettiest drives in america, and I have been on a lot of roads in america. Or keep going on down to Homer. Homer is fantastic and beautiful.

Also AK Poetry Slam! It takes place at different bars and people Poetry slam and its loads of fun.

Go to Darwins and have a beer.

The Zoo in Anchorage is great too. Siberian tigers and Musk oxen!

You can also ride your bike along the westchester creek in the summer, or ice skate in the winter, they zamboni the whole lagoon. Moose are all over the place down there.

They also have a great Ice Sculpture Festival that I think is part of Fur rondy. Fur rondy is a big festival in the middle of the winter. They have fireworks and everything. Also there is a big todo at the beginning of the Iditarod in march. The summer is basically one big party.

I hope you have as wonderful a time as I did there!

I lived in Anchorage and also at a radar site north of Fairbanks for a year courtesy of the USAF. Anchorage is just another big city with similar weather as Minneapolis. Interior Alaska is where you get the extreme cold weather.

Anchorage has way more extreme weather than Minneapolis. Minneapolis is so exaggerated with its weather that it really irritates me. We're normally about the same weather-wise as New England.

I am here! You are going to have so many choices that you will have to go to your job just to rest up! Look up the activities online. There are plenty of events and such to do and see and it there is lots of stuff no matter if you are a full-out adventurer or semi-adventurous or handicapped. Have fun, take lots of pics, make many memories! Enjoy your stay here.
