What is South Carolina most known for? Is it a good place to visit?

I haven't been all over S.C., so can't speak for the whole state, but Charleston is a great city and definitely worth a visit. It has a lot of history (first shot of the Civil war was shot here at Fort Sumter), great dining, a beautiful, historic waterfront distric, and plenty of southern charm. The islands surrounding Charleston are great for beach getaways as well (Sullivan's island, Isle of Palms, etc.).
Myrtle beach is also a big draw for its miles of beaches, and seems a good place for family visits, although personally i wouldn't recommend it.

Charleston, SC is one of the more popular tourist destinations in the United States. In addition to being a colonial city, it's where the American Civil War broke out.
